Fixed vs Growth Mindset: Why Your Brain’s Default Setting Needs a Refresh

Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Thinking

We've all heard about the importance of having a growth mindset, but what is it? And how does it differ from a fixed mindset? In this blog post, we'll explore the differences between these two mindsets and explain why it's important to have a growth mindset. We'll also share some tips for developing a growth mindset.

What is a growth mindset?

A growth mindset is when you believe your intelligence and talents can be developed over time through effort, practice, overcoming challenges, and integrating feedback from others. Rather than seeing intelligence and talent as static qualities that can’t change over time, people with a growth mindset believe it's possible to enhance these qualities with learning and experience.

Neuroscience and psychology research shows that a growth mindset motivates people to continue learning skills throughout their lifetime and helps them to feel happier.

What’s the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset?

Caroline Dweck is a Standford University Professor and one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of mindset psychology. Professor Dweck is famous for categorising how people think about their intelligence and ability as having either a growth or a fixed mindset.

Fixed Mindset vs Growth Mindset

  1. Intelligence
    • Fixed Mindset: Thinks intelligence is fixed and cannot be developed over time.
    • Growth Mindset: Believes intelligence can grow through learning.
  2. Challenges
    • Fixed Mindset: Avoids challenges due to a fear of failing.
    • Growth Mindset: Embraces challenges and isn’t discouraged by potential failure.
  3. Obstacles
    • Fixed Mindset: Gives up easily and sees temporary setbacks as personal failures.
    • Growth Mindset: Persists through setbacks, viewing failure as a learning opportunity.
  4. Effort
    • Fixed Mindset: Believes effort is pointless, thinking that only innate talent leads to mastery.
    • Growth Mindset: Believes effort and practice are essential for mastering skills over time.
  5. Criticism
    • Fixed Mindset: Ignores feedback if it seems negative.
    • Growth Mindset: Uses feedback constructively, even if it’s critical.
  6. Success of Others
    • Fixed Mindset: Feels threatened by others’ successes.
    • Growth Mindset: Finds inspiration in the success of others.

Benefits of a growth mindset

People with a growth mindset tend to perform better and feel happier at all stages of life, regardless of their age, intelligence or current ability.

For example, recent research shows that a growth mindset can lead to a wide variety of benefits including:

  1. Mood and managing stress: A 2022 psychology study of 2,500 college students found that students with a growth mindset were more resilient to stressful life events and experienced fewer mental health symptoms.
  2. Innovation at work: In another study by the Liaoning University of Technology, employees with a growth mindset showed more innovative behaviour, such as trying new strategies to achieve goals and learning from their mistakes.
  3. Learning a foreign language: A growth mindset can also help you learn a foreign language by encouraging you to keep challenging yourself even when things get tough, according to a scientific review published by Frontiers in Psychology.
  4. Mental sharpness in old age: Two separate studies published in the International Journal of Aging showed that older adults with a growth mindset showed a positive learning style and performed better on tests measuring their reaction time and memory.

How to improve your mindset

Everyone can develop a growth mindset. All it takes is a little practice!

Try following these steps recommended by Forbes to help you transform your mindset.

  1. Practice positive self-talk: Firstly, believing in yourself is crucial. Take the time to remind yourself daily that you have the power to enhance your skills and grow your knowledge. Simply saying one positive affirmation in the mirror every morning could significantly improve your mindset for the day and motivate you.
  2. Embrace challenges and failure: Push yourself to get out of your comfort zone and see challenges as exciting opportunities for growth. The next time you make a mistake and find yourself blaming yourself or someone else, take a step back and identify what the lesson could be. How can you learn from this to improve your strategy?
  3. Practice being curious: Don’t feel embarrassed or stupid if you don’t know about a topic or how to do a specific task. Instead, see it as an exciting opportunity to learn something new. Get used to asking questions that help you to expand your knowledge and improve your skills.
  4. Enjoy the process: Although it’s great to have goals, sometimes, becoming too focused on the result means that we miss out on enjoying the process. Reward yourself and recognise your hard work even when it doesn’t produce an immediate result.
  5. Turn envy into motivation: When you feel envious of someone else, don’t let your mindset be limited by thoughts like “Wow, I wish I had achieved as much as them” or “They’re so lucky to be successful”. Instead, use your admiration for their success as proof that effort and practice over time can help you achieve things you never thought possible.

If you’re looking for inspiration, try reading stories about how people have overcome challenges and eventually succeeded. Psychology researchers found that students who read struggle stories about their role models improved their growth mindset and increased their perseverance.

Try to pick role models based on your personal goals and dreams, and read their biographies or a book they’ve published. By reading about their journey to success, you might be surprised to learn about some of the challenges they face and come up with new ways to approach problems in your own life.
